Warnock’s win was the product of tireless organizing by Stacey Abrams, the New Georgia Project, the Asian American Advocacy Fund, and many other activist networks, but one group whose importance cannot be overstated is the Atlanta Dream, the WNBA team currently owned by Loeffler.
As protests over police brutality and institutionalized racism swept the country this summer, Loeffler called the Black Lives Matter movement “divisive,” a comment that seemingly activated several players. In August, Dream player Elizabeth Williams posted a photo of herself in a “Vote Warnock” shirt on Instagram, writing in a lengthy and powerful caption, “We have seen that Raphael Warnock wants to stand on the right side of history and fight for justice for everyone. He is the change that Georgia needs to create a better future for everyone.”
