What are some of the Lunar New Year traditions that you always stick to, and why? I absolutely love the mandatory Vietnamese Lunar New Year tradition of gambling. The dice game bầu cua tôm cá (gourd-crab-shrimp-fish) is my jam. It’s so noisy, and it inspires a lot of yelling—in a very fun way, because people are so invested in how the dice land. There’s also not a lot of strategy involved which really levels out the playing field. But taking money from my children during these times, when they’re only 3 and 5, doesn’t seem that great so we’re going to have to wait on that one.
How will you be celebrating the Lunar New Year differently this year? Traditionally, my family in San Francisco would get together to eat and celebrate. But of course, that’s not happening this year, so I just gave my kids haircuts and bought them some new clothes with citrus all-over print. I plan to go to Orange County to pick up food in my pajamas and Birkenstocks.
